Sophia Way
On December 8th, 2008, the Sophia Way, an overnight educational program was born from the need to continue services of our partnership with the YWCA Angeline’s Eastside Women’s Center beyond 3p.m. As we watched our sisters in need leave our facilities to brave the outdoors, a car, or a perpetual bus ride as their home, we realized that more was needed to assist them.
Our church spearheaded the effort to develop this overnight educational program and five church members are on the Board of the Sophia Way, now under the parentage of the Eastside Interfaith Social Concerns Council (EISCC). The Sophia Way overnight program graduates will be able to participate in a second part of the program which includes two years of permanent housing subsidized by the Rosco Housing Fund donated to the program by a benefactor of our church.
Having had the pleasure of opening two apartments as a result of another wonder annonyomous donation in previsou years, we have found setting up apartments for participants of the center to be a wonderful way to impact lives and use the items we have in our own homes that are no longer in need. Early in the new year, the first apartment will open. We will be looking for a coordinator for our apartment crew who will be trained by Jan Swanson. Please contact her if you are interested in being our church’s apartment crew coordinator.
If you would like to work with the Sophia Way program itself, please contact its Group Leader, Helen Leuzzi.
